The Witcher developers are seriously considering a Linux version

Linux is well on its way to becoming a gaming platform, and major developers will find it difficult to ignore it for much longer. This is just the case with CD Projekt RED, the developers of The Witcher franchise.

The Witcher 3 game is scheduled to launch most likely in 2014 and, so far, the supported platforms are the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. What about Linux, you ask?

Well, the guys from gamingonlinux.com spotted a very interesting quote from Marcin Iwiński of CD Projekt RED. It's not good news, but it's also not so bad.

“You know, one of the reasons we have not released The Witcher on Linux is that we most probably have to address five different versions of Linux and this is always terrible to support the quality of the games afterwards. The patches, the updates, and everything. If Steam will deliver a constant Linux environment, call it SteamOS or anything like that, we would love to have our games there because, you know, the more people play our games, the better for us,” says Marcin.

Given the fact that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt hasn't got a definitive release date, we might get to see it on the Linux platform, but only if SteamOS becomes a success, which in itself is a gamble.
