The municipality of the German city of Munich has decided that Ubuntu 12.04 will be the operating system distributed to fill the gap left by the “death” of Windows XP.

According to a small press release (in German, if you really want to read it), the Munich City Library Gasteig will have 2000 CDs with Ubuntu 12.04 available for any resident of the city that has been affected by the end of support for Windows XP.

This is a rather strange decision, because the initial report from the same city authorities said that Lubuntu 12.04 would be used as a replacement for the aged Windows XP. When or why this decision has been changed remains a mystery.

Choosing Lubuntu had a very specific purpose. The system requirements for this operating system are a little lower than the ones for Ubuntu 12.04 and it benefits from the same support period.
