The Solur project likes to live on the bleeding edge

The Solus operating system is still under development, but the first stable version should be out in a couple of months. The developers are working to implement the latest Linux kernel 4.0.5, which is the most advanced version available right now.

There is always a risk when you're upgrading your system to the advanced Linux kernel available, but it's a tradeoff between stability and new features. Most of the time, the risk turns out to be quite low. In fact, it would have been hard to find a Linux distro a few years back with the latest Linux kernel, but that's not the case anymore.

"Linux 4.0.5 kernel coming today, hasn't moved into v1 yet as we're doing another build to address the CVEs you see in this screenshot (Not in 4.0.3 so don't panic). Positive side - we've implemented the update mechanism for EFI machines," wrote Ikey Doherty, the leader of the Solus project.

Solus is not the first operating system with Linux kernel 4.0.5, but it will be among the first stable ones with this particular version. It will be interesting to follow Solus in their quest for the bleeding edge, but it looks like they have things well in hand.

You can download the latest Solus Beta from Softpedia and give it a spin. You will need to update it in order to get all the latest packages.
