Even though Skype is no longer an independent company and is now owned by Microsoft, it doesn't mean they can't surprise us.

Skype have just announced that the Developer Preview of SkypeKit 4.02 is now available for developers.

One of the goals of Microsoft and Skype developers is to integrate the technology in as many mediums as possible, even if that means getting it on a Linux platform. To this end, they are offering two ways for partners to integrate Skype into desktop applications.

The first one is called SkypeKit for Desktop and it's intended to add native Skype functionality directly into partner applications.

The the second one is called Skype Desktop API, previously known as the Skype API or Public API, which allows developers to extend the functionality of Skype for Windows, Skype for Mac and Skype for Linux.

Skype is also introducing Video APIs to the new SkypeKit for Desktop and a new Skype App Directory that provides developers with a proper distribution channel for the Skype-enabled apps they are building.
