The Document Foundation has released the second Beta for the new LibreOffice 4.4 branch and users should now be able to download and test the new version of the office suite.

A new, important LibreOffice version is in the works and the guys at The Document Foundation are tirelessly trying to improve the office suite. Each new release comes with exciting new features, lots of bug fixes, and improvements for the things that have been implemented.

It will take a while until LibreOffice 4.4 is made available and it will likely also get a couple of RCs. Now, this second Beta comes with a number of important changes, but at least one feature should be very interesting.

"LibreOffice 4.4 introduces Master Document Templates. These Master Document Templates can be added to the Template Manager and creating a new document based on a Master Document Template creates a Master Document with the same initial content as the Template it is based upon," reads the official website.

If you have an Ubuntu system, you might be able to get the new version from this PPA. If you really want to test the new version, you will have to remove the old one first. Just run these commands in a terminal.

code
sudo apt-get purge libreoffice-core
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/libreoffice-prereleases
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libreoffice
You can download the LibreOffice 4.4 Beta 2 source packages from Softpedia, if you want to compile them yourself. You can also get the Windows or Mac OS X versions from Softpedia as well.
