The QUAKE LIVE development team is bringing the Linux players some bad news. The support for the open source platform will be removed.

The decision to remove the support for Linux and Mac users has been made because QUAKE LIVE is transitioning to a standalone model.

“We will be unable to support Mac and Linux clients with this transition. While we have reports from our testers that the game works through emulation or virtualization software, we are unable to support native Mac and Linux versions.”

“If you’re using Mac and Linux and have a paid subscription, you will only be able to access the game using emulation or virtualization software,” said the developers on the official forums.

There you have it. Linux users will be able to play QUAKE LIVE either in VirtualBox or with Wine.
