Arne Exton, the creator of numerous distributions of Linux that are available for download on Softpedia, was happy to inform us about his latest creation, RaspAnd, a custom OS that allows you to run the Android 5.1 Lollipop mobile operating system on a Raspberry Pi 2 computer board.

RaspAnd is powered by a 3.19.0-exton-v7+ kernel based on the upstream Linux 3.19 kernel and optimized for the Raspberry Pi 2 computer. With the help of the Aptoide package manager, users will be able to install all sorts of Android applications, as well as various tweaks and optimizations.

The OS has been tested on a Raspberry Pi model B made, which was released in February 2015 and has a quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 CPU running at 900MHz and 1GB of RAM. Detailed instructions on how to run Android 5.1 on Raspberry Pi 2 are provided here.

Basically, you will have to download and extract the RaspEX distribution, create four partitions on a MicroSD card that has at least 8GB, write the system.img file to the MicroSD card, copy the files from the /boot folder of RaspEX into the first (bootable) partition, put the MicroSD card in your Raspberry Pi 2 and turn on the power.
