Some good news about development of the open-source id Tech 4 engine, more specifically Doom 3, has surfaced.

According to Michael Larabel from phoronix.com, Oliver McFadden, a developer with a lot of experience regarding engines made by id Software, has just released OpenGL ES 2.0 renderer with GLSL support for Doom 3.

This means that other developers can now potentially utilize McFadden's work to use the engine for some new games.

"The default configuration is to match the Doom 3 ARB2 renderer pixel-for-pixel (i.e. Blinn-Phong) but I've also implemented the Phong shading model, at least as much as possible within the constraints of the existing media,” said Oliver McFadden.

You mustn't get your hopes up and think that now all sorts of amazing games will start to pop up all over the place. It's just a start and there will probably be a couple of years before anything significant will arrive on the Linux platform.
