Ubuntu 15.10 will be released in October 2015

According to The Inquirer, Mark Shuttleworth, the founder of Canonical and Ubuntu, has confirmed that the recently announced Linux kernel 4.0 will be included in the upcoming Ubuntu 15.10 operating system in October 2015.

As you might know, the biggest feature of the Linux kernel 4.0, besides the big version number update, is the new kernel patching infrastructure, also known as live patching, which lets users update the kernel packages in their distributions without having to reboot.

While Mark Shuttleworth confirms that Linux kernel 4.0 will be included in future releases of Ubuntu, newer versions of the Linux kernel will be announced, such as Linux kernel 4.1 or even Linux kernel 4.2.

Given that Linus Torvalds himself has said that Linux kernel 4.1 will be the actual bigger release with more powerful features than the one introduced in Linux kernel 4.0, we do hope that the Ubuntu developers will manage to update the kernel of Ubuntu 15.10 to version 4.1 instead of 4.0.

Until then, you can give Linux kernel 4.0 a try today in your Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet) operating system by following the instructions provided by Softpedia in the How to Install Linux Kernel 4.0 on Ubuntu 15.04 tutorial.

Of course, many other GNU/Linux distributions will get the no-reboot patching feature via Linux kernel 4.0 in the upcoming weeks. Arch Linux users will probably be the most lucky ones, as the Linux kernel 4.0 packages have been already added in the testing repositories.
