Valve has announced today, May 6, the general availability of a new stable update for its popular SteamOS operating system based on Debian GNU/Linux and powered by the awesome Steam for Linux client.

After being in the Alchemist Beta channel for a few months now, the SteamOS Update 159 has been pushed today to the Alchemist Stable repository and includes a new Nvidia video driver that, unfortunately, deprecates support for older Nvidia graphics cards, including G8x, G9x, and GT2xx.

In addition to the updated Nvidia video driver, the new SteamOS Update 159 operating system includes an updated branding as well as the latest security updates from the upstream Debian GNU/Linux distribution.

"Note that older NVIDIA video cards (G8x, G9x, and GT2xx GPUs, and motherboard chipsets based on them) are no longer supported by this NVIDIA driver, and, therefore, will NOT work with SteamOS," says Valve in the announcement for SteamOS Update 159.

With this update, Valve has published new installation images, which means that you will be able to download SteamOS Update 159 right now via Softpedia or directly from the SteamOS website, where you can also find more details about Valve, Steam for Linux, and other related products.
