14 DAY TRIAL // Users who wanted Ubuntu without Unity can now try a new distribution called Ubuntu Classic that provides all the features, without any of the Unity components.
Ubuntu Classic 13.08 is based on Ubuntu 13.04, but the developer has stripped down the Unity interface. Unfortunately, his work isn’t complete, but with a little tweak you can see how Ubuntu would look like without Unity.
When booting the distribution for the first time, you will have to open a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+t) and run the command gnome-panel. Without this command, the distribution is just a desktop with very few options.
Maybe this problem will be fixed in the future, but you can also add the gnome-panel to run at startup. In any case, the developer of Ubuntu Classic made a few modifications besides removing Unity.
The default distribution is now Chromium, the Ubuntu Software Center has been replaced with Lubuntu Software Center, and Files has been replaced by the older Nautilus.
