Mark Shuttleworth, the found of Canonical, thinks that Ubuntu will achieve full convergence of the operating systems before Microsoft.

The primary goal of Canonical is to unite the code base for all of their operating systems, for Desktop, Mobile, TV, and Server. This might have started with Ubuntu Edge, the superphone that didn't manage to raise enough funds, but it will be available soon.

“The actual convergence will happen sometime during the next major cycle – it won’t be in 14.04, but it could be in 14.10 or 15.04. We believe we’ll be able to deliver that before Microsoft manages to converge Windows on mobile and PC, which the company has said is its goal from a design and development perspective,” said Mark Shuttleworth in an interview for pcpro.co.uk.

If Canonical will be able to make this convergence happen, in a couple of years time we might see one release for all the platforms.
