The launch date is still months away, but the system is rather stable

Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) is poised to be the best release in Canonical's history, so much so that even Mark Shuttleworth has invited everyone to test the new operating system.

The developers are still implementing new features and all sorts of changes into Ubuntu 14.04. It's still pretty far away from a feature freeze, but all the flavors and the base system need to be properly tested.

“Of course, my testing was relatively lightweight. I saw tons of major improvements in shared apps like LibreOffice and Firefox and Chromium, and each of the desktop environments feels true to its values, diverse as those are. What I bet those teams would appreciate is all of you taking 14.04 for a spin yourselves.”

“It’s stable enough for any of us who use Linux heavily as an engineering environment, and of course you can use a live boot image off USB if you just want to test drive the future. Cloud images are also available for server testing on all the major clouds,” said Mark Shuttleworth in a blog post.

Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) is scheduled for release on April 17.
