The LXDE desktop environment will be dropped

During the last day of Ubuntu Online Summit (UOS) for Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf), the Lubuntu development team discussed some of the upcoming features that will be implemented in the Lubuntu 15.10 Linux operating system.

Softpedia was the first to report last month, when Lubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet) was released, that it would be the last version of Lubuntu to use LXDE (Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment), as the team prepares for the switch to the modern LXQt desktop environment.

Now we have confirmation that the Lubuntu developers are working hard these days to bring you the next generation of Lubuntu built around LXQt, which will also include a new Control Panel, a new screenshot utility, a new run dialog, and a new Software Center.

Therefore, Lubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) will be the first release of the Lubuntu Linux distribution to use LXQt as the default desktop environment, which will look identical to LXDE, except for the fact that it uses the Qt libraries instead of the GTK ones employed by LXDE.

The distribution is due for release alongside Ubuntu 15.10 and other official flavors at the end of October 2015. We recommend watching the video below for more information about the upcoming features that will be implemented in Lubuntu 15.10, as well as a demo of the LXQt desktop environment the Wily Werewolf release.
