Clement Lefebvre, father of the Linux Mint project, proudly announced on his blog that the upcoming Linux Mint 12 operating system will feature a new desktop interface built on top of the GNOME 3 desktop environment.

Linux Mint 12 (Lisa) will be the first Linux Mint distribution with the GNOME 3 desktop environment. But it will feature a new user interface called MGSE (Mint Gnome Shell Extensions), which will look like a normal desktop.

The new user interface of Linux Mint 12 will feature a bottom panel, an application launcher, a window list with currently running apps, a task-centric desktop (i.e. you switch between windows, not applications) and visible system tray icons.

This is what all Linux users were expecting from a desktop environment and from a Linux distribution of our times. We can safely say that Linux Mint will be the new Ubuntu.

Dubbed Lisa, the Linux Mint 12 release will come at the end of the month, around November 20th. Until then, you can download Linux Mint 11 right now from Softpedia.
