A new Linux kernel update is now available for download

Greg Kroah-Hartman has released a new version of the Linux kernel, 3.17.4, and this is now the most advanced release available for download. It will remain like this for a few more weeks, at least until the new 3.18 branch is made available.

The updates for Linux kernel 3.17.x have arrived at a very slow pace, but that was to be expected. The developers are concentrating more on the 3.18 branch, which is still under development. Also, if you take a look at the versions still maintained right now, you will notice that only the kernels with even numbers are still being worked on.

"I'm announcing the release of the 3.17.4 kernel. All users of the 3.17 kernel series must upgrade."

"The updated 3.17.y git tree can be found at: git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git linux-3.17.y and can be browsed at the normal kernel.org git web browser: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git;a=summary," Greg Kroah-Hartman says in the email announcement.

It's unlikely that distro developers will choose this particular kernel now, unless they already have it implemented and they need an update.

More details about this release can be found in the official announcement. You can download the source package for Linux kernel 3.17.4 right now from Softpedia. You can compile it on your own, but you need to know what your doing.
