Greg Kroah-Hartman has announced that the latest version of the Linux kernel, 3.17.1, is now out and available for download. It's now the most advanced stable branch available and it will remain so for at least a couple more months.

Just a week and a half after the launch of the 3.17 branch of the Linux kernel, the first update has arrived. It's not an impressive one, but first releases rarely are. It comes with an assortment of driver updates and Arch changes, but nothing more.

“I'm announcing the release of the 3.17.1 kernel. All users of the 3.17 kernel series must upgrade.”

“The updated 3.17.y git tree can be found at: git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git linux-3.17.y and can be browsed at the normal kernel.org git web browser: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git;a=summary,” Greg Kroah-Hartman says in the email announcement.

It's not certain for how long this Linux kernel will be maintained, but if we take a look at the other editions that are still being updated, we can assume that it won't have a very long life. Nonetheless, if you already have the 3.17 version in your system, it would be a good idea to update and get all the improvements.

More details about this release can be found in the official announcement. You can download the source package for Linux kernel 3.17.1 right now from Softpedia.
