Right back on the Sunday schedule, the Linux kernel 4.1 Release Candidate 5 version was just announced a few minutes ago by none other than its creator, Linus Torvalds.

According to Linus Torvalds, the fifth Release Candidate (RC) version of the upcoming Linux kernel 4.1 is a small release that looks pretty normal and consists of two-thirds driver updates, especially for InfiniBand, GPU, networking, sound, thermal, and SCSI devices, several networking improvements, as well as architecture enhancements and file system fixes.

"So we're on schedule for a normal 4.1 release, if it wasn't for the fact that the timing looks like the next merge window would hit our yearly family vacation," says Linus Torvalds. "So we'll see how that turns out, I might end up delaying the release just to avoid that (or just delay opening the merge window). I haven't decided yet."

If you want to test this new milestone of Linux kernel 4.1, you can download the Linux kernel 4.1 RC5 sources right now via Softpedia or from the kernel.org website, but please keep in mind that this is a pre-release version that contains unresolved issues. Thus, we strongly advise you not to install it on production machine where stability is of the essence.
