Linus Torvalds had the pleasure of announcing today, March 29, the immediate availability for download and testing of the sixth Release Candidate (RC) version of forthcoming Linux 4.0 kernel. Apparently, some important bugs have been squashed, which means that the final Linux kernel 4.0 will be released sooner than expected.

According to the Mr. Torvalds’ announcement, Linux kernel 4.0 RC6 fixes the NUMA balancing performance regression, various Intel i915 video driver issues have been repaired, a KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) double-fault issue has been fixed, and numerous drivers and architectures received small fixes.

“Things are calming down nicely, and there are fixes all over,” says Linus Torvalds. “I was pretty sure that this would be a release that will go to rc8, but that may be unnecessary. [...] But please do give this a good testing, and holler if there's some regression we've missed.”

Linux kernel 4.0 Release Candidate 6 is available for download right now on Softpedia or directly from the kernel.org website. When testing the Linux 4.0 RC6 kernel, please keep in mind that it is an unstable software, which means that it’s not suitable for deployment on production machines when stability is extremely important.
