LightDM 1.11.2, a cross-desktop display manager that aims to be the standard DM for the X.Org X server, is now available for download and comes with a small number of improvements.

LightDM is a display manager that's mainly used in Ubuntu distributions, but users will find it in other Ubuntu-based distros as well. It's not a visible part of the operating system and it's not something that users interact with at any level.

The LightDM development has been going at a steady pace and its devs have just released a new version that is designed for Ubuntu 14.10 (Utopic Unicorn). It doesn’t have too many changes, but there are a couple of interesting ones.

According to the changelog, the liblightdm method is now used to get the user UID, DBus-activate logind is now available, and libgcrypt is now checked during the configure time.

Also, greeters are now allowed to remain in the background in order to reduce the startup time, asynchronous methods have been added to liblightdm, and the standard DesktopNames field has been added in the session files.

Check the source archive for more details about this release. You can download the LightDM 1.11.2 right now from Softpedia.

Regular users don't normally have to do anything to upgrade this part of the operating system, so just wait until the developers actually make it available through the repositories.
