Jonathan Riddell, the lead developer and maintainer of the Kubuntu Linux operating system, who is also a KDE developer, has announced today that the work on the next major release of the KDE Plasma 5 desktop environment has started.

According to Jonathan Riddell, KDE Plasma 5.4 is now in the works and it has an official release schedule, which suggests that the final version will be unveiled on August 20, 2015. The KDE Plasma 5.4 Beta will arrive for testing in the first week of August.

"I just closed the Plasma 5.4 kickoff meeting. It was well attended with lots of Plasma devs and VDG members there," says Jonathan Riddell in the blog post. "Plasma 5.4 is scheduled for August, it’ll be a great addition to Kubuntu 15.10."

Many interesting features were discussed during the KDE Plasma 5.4 kickoff meeting, including Wayland support, System Settings improvements, new desktop configuration tool, make Solid::Power a framework, as well as VDG (Visual Design Group) plans and focus.

As mentioned, we will be able to test the Beta version of KDE Plasma 5.4 on August 6, 2015. The final version will arrive on August 20 and it will be included by default in the Kubuntu 15.10 operating system, due for release in October 2015.
