Users will have to add a dedicated PPA for the new packages

The Kubuntu developers have made quite a few users happy by backporting KDE 4.13.2 for a couple of older releases, Kubuntu 12.04 LTS and Kubuntu 13.10.

“Packages for the release of KDE SC 4.13.2 are available for Kubuntu 12.04LTS, 13.10 and our development release. You can get them from the Kubuntu Backports PPA. Bugs in the packaging should be reported to kubuntu-ppa on Launchpad. Bugs in the software to KDE,” said the leader of the Kubuntu project, Jonathan Riddell.

Users of older Kubuntu systems can now install the new version of KDE with the help of a PPA, which can be added very easily from a terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports sudo apt-get update Users need to wait until the update process has been completed and restart the system in order to get all the pieces in place.

Kubuntu 12.04 LTS was launched back in 2012 and the developers have pledged to support the operating system for five years. On the other hand, the 13.10 version of Kubuntu will only receive support for another month. Starting from July, Ubuntu 13.10 hits EOL (end of life), which means that it won't receive any more updates.

You can still download Kubuntu 12.04 LTS right now from Softpedia.
