The KDE Community has announced that KDE Frameworks 5 Alpha has been released, marking the beginning of a new project and the beginning of the end of KDE Platform 4.

The KDE developers are working hard to replace the old KDE development cycle paradigm, and a new version of their new Framework is now available for download.

“Improvements in this release include the addition of .pri files which make it easy for qmake based projects to use individual frameworks and two new frameworks: kactivities and plasma-framework. There has also been significant progress in getting frameworks to work on the Microsoft Windows platform,” reads the official announcement.

If everything goes according to plan, a Beta version should be available in April and the final version should arrive in June. In the meantime you can download KDE Frameworks 5 Alpha from Softpedia.
