The makers of the laptop have already gotten half the money

Librem 15 is a new Linux-powered laptop in the making, and the crowdfunding campaign that's taking place on Indiegogo has just passed the halfway mark.

It's difficult to promote and sell the Librem 15 laptop because it's a rather expensive device. It's true that it promotes the use of completely free software and that it's one of the few that do this, but the price tag is a little steep. The main reason is the built quality which also rivals laptops like MacBook Air, and that is definitely no small feat.

It's also worth clarifying what free software actually means. The drivers on the Linux platform are a good example. Some of them are open source drivers made by the community and others are proprietary ones made by the companies. The laptop wants to only use the open source version.

The people from Purism who are building the laptop want to raise $250,000 (€205,000) and they have managed to pass the halfway for that sum. They still have about 32 days left in the campaign, so they just might be able to pull it off.

If you want to see more technical details about the Librem 15 laptop, you should check out the original report. Also, this would be a good time to pledge your support, as the lower tiers only have a limited supply.
