14 DAY TRIAL // The first version of Ubuntu 4.10, Warty Warthog, was released on October 20, 2004, nine years ago, marking the beginning of a great journey.
Nine years later, Ubuntu is the most downloaded and used Linux distribution, spawning numerous flavors that also got a lot of praise.
“Ubuntu is a new Linux distribution that brings together the extraordinary breadth of Debian with a fast and easy install, regular releases (every six months), a tight selection of excellent packages installed by default and a commitment to security updates with 18 months of security and technical support for every release,” reads the official announcement posted by none other than Mark Shuttleworth, the founder of Canonical.
Ubuntu 4.10 featured GNOME 2.8, Firefox 0.9, Evolution 2.0, and OpenOffice.org 1.1.2, just to name a few of the original packages.
Canonical has just released Ubuntu 13.10 (Saucy Salamander) and it seems to be carrying on just fine. Let's hope we can say happy birthday again nine years from now.
