Git 2.1.0, a free and open source distributed version control system designed to handle everything from small to very large projects with speed and efficiency, has been officially released.

The new Git 2.1.x branch continues the trend of large releases, integrating a big number of changes and fixes. This is a rather hefty version and it's been in the works for quite some time. The devs have jumped from the 2.0.x branch directly to 2.1.

"Since the very beginning of Git, we gave the LESS environment a default value 'FRSX' when we spawn 'less' as the pager. 'S' (chop long lines instead of wrapping) has been removed from this default set of options, because it is more or less a personal taste thing, as opposed to the others that have good justifications (i.e. 'R' is very much justified because many kinds of output we produce are colored and 'FX' is justified because output we produce is often shorter than a page)," reads the official announcement.

According to the developers, the logic and data used to compute the display width needed for UTF-8 strings have been updated, the HTTP-based transports have been improved, the completion script for bash (in contrib/) has been updated, and the build procedure for "subtree" (in contrib/) has been cleaned up.
