The Release Candidate (RC) version of the forthcoming and anticipated GNOME 3.16 desktop environment will be released later this week, and its developers have already started uploading packages to the main FTP server for testing purposes before the final release gets out.

GVFS (GNOME Virtual File System) is one of those packages that got an update today, March 16, bringing all sorts of changes. According to the release notes, some obsolete ObexFTP code has been removed in GVFS 1.24.0 RC, and reliability improvements have been added to metadata.

In addition to all of the above, several other bugs have been fixed, including a crash that occurred on WebDAV mounts when using DNS Service Discovery (DNS-SD), some issues with directory parsing, as well as segfaults that appeared when unmounting FTP mounts.

Last but not least, the mount timeout has been increased to 30 minutes, several man-pages and language translations have been updated, and users will now be able to force unmount when removing devices. More details can be found in the raw changelog for GVFS 1.24.0 RC.

Download GVFS 1.24.0 Release Candidate (RC) right now via Softpedia, but please keep in mind that it is an unstable software that shouldn’t be installed and used on production machines. The final version of GVFS 1.24.0 will be distributed as part of GNOME 3.16.
