The GNOME Project has announced today, April 15, the immediate availability for download of new maintenance releases for its Mutter window manager and compositor used in the GNOME desktop environment.

Mutter 3.16.1 was announced on April 14 and it introduced a new function to refresh all background instances, better support for swapped scroll methods on the Wayland display server, as well as the addition of a new default center pointer on the primary monitor on startup.

In addition, the first point release of Mutter 3.16 fixes accessibility on Wayland by manually activating the stage, makes sure that the input settings are always applied on startup, and it now commits the cached surface state when subsurface goes desynchronized on Wayland.

Six other miscellaneous bugs have been squashed as well on Mutter 3.16.1. However, the developers released Mutter 3.16.1.1 a day after the release of Mutter 3.16.1 in order to prevent a crash that occurred when adding input devices or switching VTs (virtual terminal). More details can be found here and here.

Mutter 3.16.1.1 is now available for download via Softpedia as a source package. It is currently distributed as part of the GNOME 3.16.1 desktop environment and can be installed on supported GNU/Linux operating systems via their default software repositories.
