As reported a couple of days ago, the Fedora developers proposed system firmware updates for the upcoming Fedora 23 Linux operating system, implemented via the GNOME Software package manager.

Today, we see that the fwupd tool that lets Linux users update the firmware of their UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) machines has been added as a dependency automagic for the upcoming GNOME Software 3.18 application that will be part of the GNOME 3.18 desktop environment, due for release on September 23, 2015.

As you might know, GNOME is the default desktop environment of Fedora Linux, available in the Workstation edition of the operating system, so the forthcoming Fedora 23 distro will definitely include the GNOME 3.18 desktop with the improved GNOME Software package manager that will offer support for system firmware updates.

GNOME Software 3.17.2 was released a few days ago as part of the GNOME 3.17.2 desktop environment and it has been ported to SoupSession, and fixes crashes in the sources dialog, screenshot loader, as well as in the installation of RPM packages that don't have a description.

Also, we can report that GNOME Software 3.17.2 patches a regression introduced in the previous milestone towards GNOME Software 3.18 that did not allow users to install updates. Long package descriptions are now wrapped in the update dialog and translations have been updated.

While you can download the GNOME Software 3.17.2 sources right now from Softpedia, we recommend testing the software as part of the GNOME 3.17.2 desktop environment. However, please try to keep in mind that this is a pre-release version that might contain unresolved issues.
