The GNOME Project is preparing to release the first milestone towards the GNOME 3.18 desktop environment, which will see the light of day on October 23, 2015.

Several core components and applications have been updated these days in preparation for the GNOME 3.17.1 release of the acclaimed desktop environment, including the GNOME Shell user interface.

According to the release notes, GNOME Shell 3.17.1 adds a Display Settings entry to the background menu, as well as a window menu option that allows users to move to a different monitor more easily.

Additionally, the switch style has been improved in the Adwaita and HighContrast themes, and the event highlight in the Calendar applet has been modified to be more prominent.

An issue with the keyboard focus that occurred when focusing a notification banner has been fixed, and the notification banners were moved below the dateMenu. A couple of other bugs have been addressed as well in GNOME Shell 3.17.1.

Three language translations have also been updated. You can download GNOME Shell 3.17.1 right now from Softpedia, but please keep in mind that it's a pre-release version that might contain unresolved issues.
