FreeNAS, a free implementation of a minimal FreeBSD distribution, has just reached version 8.0.2, bringing some serious updates.

First of all, the image size increased from version 8.0.1 Beta 3, the new size requiring a 2 GB storage device. The other important thing to know is that the 'GUI upgrade' can be used to upgrade a system from Beta 3, Beta 4, or RC1, but upgrades from earlier releases can only be done from the CD.

Among other fixes brought by FreeNAS 8.0.2 we can mention: the email subsystem is now working properly, fixed setting recursive ACLs, fixed case in iSCSI targets to match the behavior specified by RFC 3722, the GUI has an event notification system, improved and reworked snapshot replication, and support for exporting ZFS zvols (virtual devices) as device extents via iSCSI.
