FreeBSD, an operating system for x86 compatible, ARM, IA-64, PowerPC, PC-98 and UltraSPARC architectures, is now at version 9.0.

FreeBSD 9.0 is finally here, after the developers made available three release candidates, the last one just last week.

Among the tons of updates and changes, the most important one is the introduction of  Capsicum Capability Mode, which is a set of features for sandboxing support, using a capability model in which the capabilities are file descriptors.

Also, Helper Hoo and Kernel Helpers KPIs have been implemented (a kind of superset of pfil(9) framework for more general use in the kernel), a new resource accounting API has been implemented, and the OS now supports the OtherOS feature for Playstation 3 (firmware 3.15 and earlier).

A complete list of changes is available in the official announcement.
