FreeBSD, an operating system for x86, ARM, IA-64, PowerPC, PC-98 and UltraSPARC architectures, is now at version 8.4.

After quite a few release candidates, the final version of FreeBSD has arrived. As you would expect, the new package versions are rather conservative, but that’s to be expected.

According to the developers, FreeBSD 8.4 can be installed from bootable ISO images or over the network, and some architectures (currently amd64 and i386) even support installing from a USB memory stick.

Highlights of FreeBSD 8.4:

• GNOME has been updated to version 2.32.1; • KDE has been updated to version 4.10.1; • The new ZFS filesystem has been implemented; • All shipping LSI storage controllers are now supported.

More details about this release can be found in the official announcement.
