The Fedora Project proudly announced a few minutes ago the immediate availability of the Alpha version of its upcoming Fedora 22 (Twenty Two) Linux operating system for personal computers and servers, due for release on May 19, 2015.

We’ve grabbed the Xfce Spin of Fedora 22 Alpha to make a screenshot tour of the final Xfce 4.12 desktop environment, for your viewing pleasure (check it out below). We can report that Xfce 4.12 uses its standard and traditional layout in Fedora 22. The distribution is powered by Linux kernel 4.0 RC1.

Among the included applications, we can mention the Thunar 1.6.6 file manager, Midori 0.5.9 web browser, Transmission 2.84 BitTorrent client, AbiWord 3.0.1 word processor, Claws Mail 3.11.1 email client, Pragha Music Player 1.2.2, and Gnumeric 1.12.20 spreadsheet editor.

The Fedora 22 Alpha Workstation received a lot of changes

The Workstation edition of Fedora 22 Alpha, which is the main edition of the operating system, received the most changes, such as the redesigned GNOME Shell notification system that has been integrated into the Calendar applet, improved Automatic Bug Reporting Tool, better GNOME Software integration, improved Nautilus file manager, the new GNOME Shell theme, Terminal enhancements, and Wayland support for the login screen.

"We need your help to make Fedora 22 the best release yet, so please take some time to download and try out the Alpha and make sure the things that are important to you are working. If you find a bug, please report it – every bug you uncover is a chance to improve the experience for millions of Fedora users worldwide." was stated in today's announcement.

The Fedora 22 Beta release should be out next month, on April 14

The development cycle of Fedora is extremely simple, as it only includes an Alpha and a Beta release prior to the final version. As such, the Beta release should be available for testing next month, on April 14, if everything goes according to the release plan.

You can download Fedora 22 Alpha Xfce Spin for 32- and 64-bit right now from Softpedia. Additionally, the Fedora 22 Alpha Workstation, Server, and Cloud images are also available for download from our website, so make sure you check out our the dedicated Linux section.
