A lot of updated packages were integrated in this release candidate

Scientific Linux, a recompiled Red Hat Enterprise Linux put together by various labs and universities around the world, has reached version 5.8 RC1.

Scientific Linux 5.8 RC1 should be installed from scratch because, most likely, a "yum" upgrade to this version will not work.

A number of updated packages made it into this first Release Candidate version, such as 915resolution, a tool to modify the video BIOS of the 800 and 900 series Intel graphics chipsets, Alpine, a tool for reading, sending, and managing electronic messages, and AUFS, a stackable unification filesystem such as Unionfs.

A comprehensive changelog can be found in the official announcement. Download Scientific Linux 5.8 RC1 right now from Softpedia. Remember that this is a beta release and it should NOT be installed on production machines. It is intended to be used for testing purposes only.
