A few Linux users have been asking for a Linux version of Microsoft Office

Various rumors about Microsoft Office for Linux have been floating around for a couple of years now and Linux users have even asked Microsoft to start working on a version, but do we really need it?

The Linux platform has a few pretty decent office suites that can easily take on Microsoft Office, at least at a normal level, but there are some users that would happily use Microsoft Office on Linux.

For example, a couple of years ago, someone made an official request on the Microsoft forum, asking for an Office port.

“We have a number of clients that use Linux desktops (mostly Ubuntu) and would like a better solution to connect to the exchange server than using a limited feature set of a web browser. They also use Libre Office (Open Office fork) and have some compatibility issues when opening documents from other internal/external MS Office users.”

“I would not expect this to be a free product or an open source product, but a commercially produced version compatible with the Linux platform. Essentially the same as what has been created in the Mac world ‘Microsoft Office for Mac’,” said Ron Campbell on the forum.

The number of people expressing their desire on that forum to see Microsoft Office on Linux has increased and we can easily surmise that there are a lot more out there.

What do you think? Do we really need or want Microsoft Office on Linux?
