The Ubuntu Touch OS is almost ready for shipping

Most of the work done by third-party developers for the Ubuntu Touch platform consists of new apps and scopes and very few tackle stuff that is much deeper embedded in the operating system, but that has now changed.

Nekhelesh Ramananthan built a bottom edge concept launcher for Ubuntu Touch that really impressed the team working on the operating system, and even Mark Shuttleworth, the founder of Canonical, praised the new launcher. It's not every day that you see this kind of implication from the community and it goes well beyond what you might expect.

"I created a new bottom edge concept which provides radial menu options. I will be adding it to the Ubuntu Component Store to help spread this component. Ofcourse I am looking for feedback on this component," wrote Nekhelesh Ramananthan on Google+.

Canonical was telling developers a while ago to love the bottom edge and provided some interesting concepts of its own. Nothing really interesting came out of that initiative, but it's possible that we'll get to see now more work done in this direction.

The Ubuntu Touch RTM is still under development and the seventh update was just released for the new operating system. If the developer moves fast enough, users might be able to download this radial menu from the Ubuntu Store before the official launch, which is expected to arrive sometime in December.

We have been informed that the packages have already landed in the Component Store.
