It will be a while until they become a reality

The Debian project has chosen the names of the next two versions of the operating system that are scheduled to be released in the coming years. They don't have any glamour, but they will be easily remembered.

Debian releases never had any intricate code names, but there is an upside to this. Many users actually use the names to mention a specific version of Debian, instead of the numbers. For example, "Wheezy" is much more commonly known as the stable branch and "Jessie" as the testing one.

The Release Team from the Debian project has just finished a sprint and they reached some very interesting conclusions, including the names of the upcoming releases. Debian 9 "Stretch" and Debian 10 "Buster" are the new code names, but it will be a while until we'll have to learn them. The Debian 8.0 branch is still months away from the final release.

Besides the names, the Release Team has also determined some of the most pressing issues for the project. "At the time of writing, we had already dealt with 162 unblock requests. Of those, 17 require further information from the submitter, and three were pre-approvals awaiting upload. Sixteen unblock bugs await our attention."

In the meantime, you can download the Debian versions from Softpedia and give them a try.
