Debian 8 (Jessie) was announced only a month ago, and now its developers are preparing the first point update for it and they even have a precise date in mind.

The Debian project is not known for its precise schedule. In fact, it's difficult to anticipate when new Debian releases are made available, so getting an actual date, even if it's just for an update, is a big step forward.

"The first point release for 'jessie' (8.1) is scheduled for Saturday, June 6th. Stable NEW will be frozen during the preceding weekend," said Adam D. Barratt in a very short message.

The Debian project has just elected a new leader, in the person of Neil McGovern, and he might be the one trying to get things moving. In any case, the entire Debian team has been moving a little bit faster, and evidence of that is that new releases happen faster than they used to. Also, the developers are now also maintaining a few LTS versions, which can be considered a real progress.

Until the first update for Debian 8 lands next week, you can download the distro from Softpedia and install it. This way, you'll be ready to upgrade to 8.1 in no time.
