DEFT, a Linux distribution based on Linux kernel 3.x and the DART (Digital Advanced Response Toolkit) with the best freeware Computer Forensic tools, is now at version 8.1.

DEFT developers are usually taking their time when it comes to updating the operating system. This is just a maintenance upgrade, which means that no new features have been added, only various fixes.

“Here it's hot, in Italy as well as in other Countries, a lot of people are on vacation, but only now - I'm sorry for that - I found the time to fix the known issues of DEFT 8.1,” says one of the developers.

According to the changelog, a bug that in some conditions prevented the system from being installed has been fixed, a problem with DNS on /etc/resolv.conf has been fixed, a bug with apt-get sources.list has been corrected, the device recognition in live-mode has been improved, and all packages have been updated to the latest Ubuntu release available for Quantal.

DEFT 8.2 is not the only operating system dedicated to forensic investigations, but it's certainly the best you can find. DEFT stands for Digital Evidence & Forensic Toolkit and is based on Lubuntu. It's a set of tools used by law enforcement agencies during computer forensic investigations.

More details about this release are available in the official changelog. You can download DEFT Linux 8.2 right now from Softpedia.
