The game is now showing in the Steam library, but users can't download it

Civilization IV, a turn-based strategy developed by Firaxis and distributed by 2K Games, might get a Linux version shortly.

Soon after the release of Civilization V for Linux a new entry has been spotted in the Steam database. This might look like any other port and it's nice to see that 2K Games and Firaxis are trying to make older games available for the open source platform, but the game is not ported by Aspyr Media.

The Linux devs from Aspyr Media have said in a AMA session on Reddit that they are not responsible for the port and that they don't know who is doing it.

If you have Civilization IV in your Steam Library, you will also notice that it appears in the list of games, although you can't install it.

Sid Meier's Civilization IV has been regarded by the gaming community as the best in the series, although it's fighting for the first place with Civilization V. There is no information about who is making the port or about the launch date, but it's very likely that it will happen.

The information about the Linux version is taken from the Steam database, and by no means is it completely certain. The Steam Database is a record of data that describes every Steam game and subscription provided by Valve for the Steam service.

Usually, the new entries are first visible in the Steam Database before their official launch and sometimes it can take even a few months for a game to arrive on Linux.

UPDATE: We have been contacted by Aspyr Media and we have some additional details about the Linux projects of the company. We have also corrected the information regarding Civilization IV and Aspyr Media, which could not be confirmed.

"We don't have anything to announce about Civilization IV Linux today, but I will say we are hard at work on an update to Civilization V based on the incredible community feedback we received. I can also confirm that we are working on multiple Linux projects that we are really excited about!" said Michael Blair from Aspyr Media.
