It will take a while until Cinnamon reaches repos

Cinnamon 2.6 was released yesterday and the developers have promised that it will be available in the supported Linux Mint flavors by the end of the month.

Now that Cinnamon has been officially released, and you might think that it's already available in the official repos, but the truth is it will take a while until that happens. Cinnamon is a desktop environment and that means it's an incredibly complex piece of software. It's not so easy to implement a major upgrade in an operating system and hope that you don't ruin everything.

The developers have explained that the Cinnamon 2.6 branch should be available by default in Linux Mint 17.2 "Rafaela" and LMDE 2 "Betsy" (Linux Mint Debian) by the end of June, so users will have to wait just a little bit longer.

If you are using Linux Mint 17.1 right now, you can install the Cinnamon 2.6 branch from the Romeo repository and help the development team find problems and other issues. You can also download Cinnamon 2.6 from Softpedia and install it manually in Linux Mint, but it needs compilation and you really have to know what you are doing. This is not just another application.
