Canonical initially announced that they will be sticking with GNOME 3.8 for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, but it seems that users might get GNOME 3.10 after all, or at least some parts of it.

Adopting GNOME 3.10 in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS would have posed some problems that were greater than the potential benefits, but the issues have been resolved and the GNOME Shell 3.10 packages have landed in testing repositories for Ubuntu 14.04.

This is actually good news for the Ubuntu GNOME 14.04 developers who will be able to implement newer packages for their distribution.

Canonical is putting a lot of effort into the development of Ubuntu 14.04 (Trusty Tahr), which will be an LTS release. This means that the company will provide support for the next five years.

Implementing GNOME 3.8 would have been perceived as a bad decision by some users, regardless of the valid technical reasons.
