Softpedia was the first to report a couple of days ago that the 3.19 kernel series reached the end of its life with the release of Linux kernel 3.19.8, which will no longer be supported with security patches and updates, as announced by Greg Kroah-Hartman.

Today, May 13, we report that the Ubuntu Kernel Team, through Kamal Mostafa, is proud to announce that they will keep the 3.19 kernel branch alive for one more year, until July 2016, especially for their Ubuntu 15.04 operating system.

"Canonical's kernel team will pick up stable maintenance where Greg KH left off with v3.19.8 (thanks, Greg!)," says Kamal Mostafa. "Canonical's Ubuntu kernel team is pleased to announce that we will be providing extended stable support for the Linux 3.19 kernel until July 2016 as a third party effort maintained on our infrastructure."

Ubuntu 15.04 users can rest assured that they will get the latest security patches in the Linux kernel packages of the Vivid Vervet operating system with the help of Canonical's Ubuntu Kernel maintainers, who promise to follow the same standard rules that are applied to the upstream stable kernels.

Canonical launched the Ubuntu 15.04 (codename Vivid Vervet) a month ago, on April 23, 2015, with Linux kernel 3.19 on board. As you might know, Canonical never upgrades the kernel implemented in an Ubuntu release to another version, with the exception of LTS releases. As such, Ubuntu 15.04's kernel will be based on Linux kernel 3.19.8.
