The issue has been patched and users must upgrade

We reported earlier this week that a vulnerability discovered recently in the Linux kernel packages of Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet), Ubuntu 14.10 (Utopic Unicorn), Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr), and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin) has been addressed.

On May 8, Canonical published two new security notices informing users about a Linux kernel regression introduced with the update from May 4 (see link above), but affecting only the Ubuntu 14.10 (Utopic Unicorn) and Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) operating systems, for which they apologize.

"USN-2598-1 fixed vulnerabilities in the Linux kernel, however an unrelated regression in the auditing of some path names was introduced. Due to the regression the system could crash under certain conditions. This update fixes the problem. We apologize for the inconvenience," says Canonical.

Therefore, all Ubuntu 14.10 and 14.04 LTS users are urged to update their Linux kernel packages to linux-image-3.16.0-37 (3.16.0-37.51) for Ubuntu 14.10 (Utopic Unicorn) and linux-image-3.13.0-52 (3.13.0-52.86) for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr).

To update, open the Unity Dash, search for 'Software Updater', open the app and wait for it to refresh the update channels. Apply any available updates. Once the update is complete, you must reboot your machine for the changes to be applied. Run the uname -a command in the Terminal to see if your kernel matches with those highlighted above.
