The cooperative FPS from Gearbox Software is unlikely to get a Linux version

Randy Pitchford, the boss of Gearbox Software, promised a few days ago that he would make some inquiries about a possible Linux version for Borderlands 2, but he didn't return with good news.

When Randy Pitchford said he would ask around to find out what it takes to get a Linux version of Borderlands 2, the entire Linux community lit up like a Christmas tree. He didn't return with good news, although he didn't crush all hope.

Someone on Twitter asked the boss of Gearbox about the Linux version, as promised, and the answer was a little disappointing. “It happened. I talked to some people. I talked to some people about it today, too. I wouldn't get your hopes up too much...”

It seems that a Linux version for Borderlands 2 is now unlikely. If Randy Pitchford thought that it might be possible from a technological point of view, maybe the last hurdle is to find the money the company needs to invest into the porting process.

Even if it's done in-house, the costs for a Linux port would be substantial, if you take into account the programmers and the Beta testers alone. Surely, there are other hidden costs as well. So, that's that for Borderlands 2 on Linux.
