Andrei Cherepanov has had the great pleasure of informing us about the immediate availability for download of the fifth maintenance release of the Russian ALT Linux 7.0 operating system.

Being distributed as Centaurus, KDesktop, Schools Suite (it includes School Teacher, School Server, School Master, School Junior), and Simply flavors, the ALT Linux 7.0.5 operating system is powered by Linux kernel 3.14.41 LTS and Mesa 10.0.5 graphics library.

The distribution updates all the packages to their latest versions available as of May 22, 2015, updates timezones, adds support for joining Active Directory domains via the System Control Center app, and brings RW (Read/Write) partition support to the Live CDs during UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) boot.

ALT Linux 7.0.5 now offers "always configured" online repositories and introduces the "poweroff" command-line parameter for the kernel, allowing for automatic shutdown of the computer after installation, a feature that might be handy when you want to deploy ALT Linux on multiple PCs.

The Centaurus edition of ALT Linux 7.0.5 comes with the MATE 1.6.0 desktop environment. The Mozilla Firefox web browser has been updated to version 31.6.0, and the Nvidia video drivers to versions 346.72, 340.76, 304.125, and 173.14.39. The KDesktop edition now displays system journal on tty12 and adds an installation source that was missing during the initialization of the installer.

Lastly, several issues were patched in the Intel video driver. Download ALT Linux 7.0.5, ALT Linux KDesktop 7.0.5, ALT Linux Simply 7.0.5, ALT Linux (School Junior) 7.0.5, ALT Linux (School Master) 7.0.5, ALT Linux (School Server) 7.0.5, and ALT Linux (School Teacher) 7.0.5 right now from Softpedia.
