4MPlayer is a very interesting Linux distribution that has only one particular function, to become a player for your CD / DVD drive. It might not seem like much, but there isn't anything actually quite like it.

Linux distributions usually come with a media player that is perfectly capable of playing pretty much any kind of video file, including CDs and DVDs, but what happens if you only have the PC and no operating system? This is where the 4MPlayer comes into play.

"4MPlayer can be treated as a small tool, which will turn your CD/DVD drive into a powerful CD/DVD player. This initial release includes MPlayer SVN-r37293 and FFMpeg Git-2014-10-06," reads the official website. Basically, 4MPlayer uses a 4MLinux base for the operating system and the MPlayer application to view movies.

Users need to boot up the system, let's say from a CD. After the Live boot has been completed, users can remove the CD and put their own disk. MPlayer has a pretty easy-to-use interface, so it really needs no explanations.

Users can download the 4MPlayer 11.0 Beta distribution from Softpedia and give it a try. This is not a stable edition and you might find bugs and other problems, and you should let the developers know about them.
