This is still a Beta and it might remain like this

4MDoom 11.0 Beta is a new Linux distribution based on 4MLinux distribution and basically booting directly into a game, without any kind of other desktop or features.

This is probably one of the weirdest Linux distros around. One thing is certain, there aren't too many operating systems out there booting directly into a game, so if you're a fan of the Doom games, and of Freedoom in particular, then this is exactly what you're looking for.

"4MLinux has always been a big fan of classic 'shoot'em up' games. Freedoom is an amazing FPS, which is under continuous development, so no wonder that this game is getting better and better. 4MLinux will try to load dedicated display drivers for your video card. But if your GPU is unsupported, 2D drivers will be used instead.," wrote the developer.

Freedoom has some finicky controls and it's hard to manage, but it's playable and it looks much more interesting than the original Doom did. It's also a lot more challenging and even veteran users will find it quite difficult.

You can download 4MDoom 11.0 Beta from Softpedia and give it a spin. You can't install this distro, but it runs very well as a Live CD and it has very low system requirements.
